Complexity of a modern enterprise and its flexibility in the sector of industrial automation

The awareness of the growing importance of the complexity in creating a new type of a modern enterprise strategy and in introducing changes within planning, control and organizational structures contributed to undertaking studies on relationships occurring between the complexity of a modern enterprise and its flexibility in the sector of industrial automation, as well as filling the gap relating to the cognitive impact of poor complexity management on the flexibility of the company. The main objective of the research work is to check whether there is an important relationship between the complexity of the business and its flexibility in the industrial automation sector. Quantification of the relationship between these two quantities – the complexity and flexibility – happened by the use of the Multidimensional Correspondence Analysis (MCA) and Perceptual Maps. The study which has been carried out indicated that the flexibility and complexity functions in the enterprise management rise, however, the knowledge of these issues is highly insufficient. The research discovered that the obstacles which hamper striking a balance between the flexibility and complexity in their advanced stages exert a devastating impact on the quality of the process management. Reducing the flexibility at its higher levels generates a context in which the market risk is enhanced. Companies characterised by improper flexibility management bear higher workforce costs and their processes of decision-making last longer. Methodical and systematized study of flexibility and complexity will decrease the destructive influence of the interaction between these two categories.

Theory of constraints as a stimulus towards warehouse transformation process on the example of the distribution center

In the face of challenges faced by today’s managers, such as unreliability of processes conducted within the company, low quality of materials, too long time of fulfilling the customer orders and missing the deadlines of their implementation, the role of dynamic parameters of the warehousing as the source of competitive advantage of a modern enterprise is growing. The aim of the study is to identify and analyze the factors determining the effective implementation of the warehousing in the Distribution Center. In the research there has been adopted the following hypothesis: with the increase in the number of customer orders, which is characterized by an increasingly smaller number of assortment items, the importance of managing constraints limiting the material flow within the warehousing is increasing. The above-mentioned hypothesis is verified in accordance with the test procedure including literature research and a case study. The research results show that the Theory of Constraints is an excellent tool supporting the transformation of the warehouse management method. With the help of the Theory of Constraints it is possible to determine precisely the places in the material flow, where the adaptation actions undertaken bring down the greatest effects.

Wobec tendencji nieustannego wzrostu liczby zamówień klienckich, które cechuje coraz mniejsza liczba pozycji asortymentowych, rośnie znaczenie poprawy parametrów kompletacji w procesie magazynowania jako źródło przewagi konkurencyjnej współczesnego przedsiębiorstwa (Pulverich, Schietinger, 2009, s. 17). Celem badania jest analiza czynników warunkujących efektywną realizację fazy kompletacji w przedsiębiorstwie. W badaniu przyjęto następującą hipotezę badawczą: operacja kompletacji podnosząc efektywność całego procesu magazynowania, staje się istotnym czynnikiem przewagi konkurencyjnej współczesnych centr magazynowych. Hipoteza główna zostaje poddana weryfikacji zgodnie z procedura badawczą obejmującą badania literaturowe oraz studium przypadku. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań pokazują, że rośnie rola zintegrowanego działania zorientowanego na usprawnienie pracy operacyjnej strefy kompletacji w uzyskaniu przewagi konkurencyjnej przedsiębiorstwa.

Considering the tendency of the continuous increase of the number of customer orders, which are characterized by the continually shrinking number of assortment items, there is growing importance of continuous improving of picking parameters within the warehousing process as a source of competitive advantage of a modern enterprise. The aim of the study is to analyze the factors determining the effective completion of the picking process within the Distribution Center in a company. The following main hypothesis has been adopted: The picking operation through increase of the efficiency of the entire warehousing process and the material and information flow carried out within it, becomes a key attribute of the competitiveness of the modern enterprise. The main hypothesis is verified in accordance with a research procedure including literature research and a case study. The results of the conducted research emphasize that the role of integrated operation oriented at improving the operational work of the picking zone is becoming increasingly important in gaining a competitive advantage in the sector of warehousing.
