The concept of park seminars originated in the former German Democratic Republic. At the park seminar in 1976 in Wiesenburg, in addition to presentations and park walks, special lectures were held for the first time along with park maintenance activities that the public could take part in. After the reunification of Germany, the idea of organizing park seminars like those in Saxony spread to other regions of the country. When Poland joined the European Union, seminars were run there as well, like the seminar in Muskau Park or in parks in Morawa, Brody, Kliczków, or Iłowa Żagańska. Park seminars have become a custom in some places, such as Brody, Kromlau or Morawa. Located in Brody in the Lubuskie Province, the estate which was once owned by Heinrich, Count von Brühl (1700–1763), recently hosted the 4th International Park Seminar at the end of October. The purpose of this paper is to promote the idea of park seminars in Poland, with emphasis on Lower Silesia.
Grasses were appreciated in decorating of gardens only in the twentieth century, nonetheless the perennial nurseries and garden centres offer today a wide assortment of plants from this group. These plants are primarily ornamental thanks to habit, leafs and inflorescences. Their features are gaining importance when we try to associate them with other perennials and shrubs. A basic condition for successful cultivation of grass in the garden is to take account of their environmental requirements.
A way of establishing and caring for lawns in gardens based on our own researches and literature data have been discussed in the article. Because of aesthetical values and the functions which a lawn performs in the garden, the steps which are necessary to be taken to have a beautiful and durable lawn have been stressed. The optimal solution which allows improvement of the quality of lawns is a change of approach to the problem of starting and care over the lawn. For the reason of lack of sufficient number of studies in our country it would be advisable to use the scientific and practical elaborations from Germany as climatic conditions are very close to the ones in Poland.
In the year 2000 the investigations aimed at determining the degree of turfness and plant species of 16 football pitches of the Wrocław District League were carried out. It was found that some grass species appeared in the process of natural plant succession, or by sod seeding resulting from grass damage during football games. Weed infestation in the majority of pitches was high (from 6% to 63%), which was due to insufficient treatment, especially fertilization, irrigation, aeration and irregular cutting. Besides, the selection of grass ingredients for the pitches was inappropriate.
