In this article we propose a general framework incorporating semantic indexing and search of texts within scientific document repositories. In our approach, a semantic interpreter, which can be seen as a tool for automatic tagging of textual data, is interactively updated based on feedback from the users, in order to improve quality of the tags that it produces. In our experiments, we index our document corpus using the Explicit Semantic Analysis (ESA) method. In this algorithm, an external knowledge base is used to measure relatedness between words and concepts, and those assessments are utilized to assign meaningful concepts to given texts. In the paper, we explain how the weights expressing relations between particular words and concepts can be improved by interaction with users or by employment of expert knowledge. We also present some results of experiments on a document corpus acquired from the PubMed Central repository to show feasibility of our approach.

Content available remote Unsupervised Similarity Learning from Textual Data
EN
This paper presents a research on the construction of a new unsupervised model for learning a semantic similarity measure from text corpora. Two main components of the model are a semantic interpreter of texts and a similarity function whose properties are derived from data. The first one associates particular documents with concepts defined in a knowledge base corresponding to the topics covered by the corpus. It shifts the representation of a meaning of the texts from words that can be ambiguous to concepts with predefined semantics. With this new representation, the similarity function is derived from data using a modification of the dynamic rule-based similarity model, which is adjusted to the unsupervised case. The adjustment is based on a novel notion of an information bireduct having its origin in the theory of rough sets. This extension of classical information reducts is used in order to find diverse sets of reference documents described by diverse sets of reference concepts that determine different aspects of the similarity. The paper explains a general idea of the approach and also gives some implementation guidelines. Additionally, results of some preliminary experiments are presented in order to demonstrate usefulness of the proposed model.

Content available The role of project management in business operation
EN
The main objective of the study “The role of project management in the hospitality business operation” was to develop recommendations for the selection of project management standards which will allow the effective achievement of their objectives, in particular to define and adjust their management standards. The study was carried out in the period from 01/01 to 31/12/2011, while the fundamental phase of the study fell in the period from 01/08 to 30/11. A set of 5 specific objectives was used which were operationalized into 7 research questions and 5 research techniques, both quantitative and qualitative. The study used secondary data which constituted statistical and demonstrative material, as a result of which it was possible to develop a typology of projects implemented in hotel companies and compare project management standards. The above compilations were used to construct research tools in order to obtain primary data - the results of surveys and individual in-depth interviews. The study allowed the following main conclusions to be drawn: 1. The natural and cultural values of the region as well as regional and local tourist products are not perceived by hotel companies as attractive resources for creating their own offer. 2. Low propensity of hotel businesses to cooperate in integrating promotional activities for the region as an attractive tourist destination. 3. Low interest of hotel companies in the activities of sustainable development. 4. Low effectiveness of dialogue and cooperation between the hotel industry and other actors of the regional tourism market. 5. Moderate satisfaction of hotel companies with the implemented projects, there are no grounds to unequivocally state that the project was successful. 6. Hotels operating in the Łódź region conduct individual marketing activities on a small scale being focused exclusively on the promotion of their own offer. 7. Low propensity of hotel companies to establish cooperation within the tourism industry. 8. Hotel companies in the Łódź Voivodeship implement projects using few management standards. For these conclusions detailed recommendations were formulated indicating possible remedial actions aimed at reversing adverse trends or strengthening positive effects.

Both scientific associations and industry are interested in increasing the safety of pharmaceuticals. Potentially dangerous compounds could be filtered out at early stages of research and development by computer prediction (PASS program) of biological activity. It may recognize some unwanted activities at the early stage of research and development, providing the pharmacist with means to increase the efficiency of projects. We have also presented the results of research on the development of new drugs documented during the last 5 years.
