The paper presents the European Union’s approach to promote the advantages of short sea shipping as efficient and sustainable alternative solution to the global issues of road congestion. European Commission has made Short Sea Shipping one of the major priorities for European transport and maritime industries have made it one of their key areas for development. Short Sea Shipping plays an important role in reaching the objectives of the European Transport Policy, as it can help curb the forecasted substantial increase in heavy goods vehicle traffic, rebalance the modal shares and bypass land bottlenecks. In the paper are presented the advantages of Short Sea Shipping and the measures adopted by the European Union in order to better promote the use of this mode. Short Sea Shipping needs to be developed within an integrated and participatory approach, with the reliable involvement of stakeholders from the entire sector in order to fulfil its economic, commercial, social and environmental role.

This article presents a part of the qualitative research results from the GECAMET international academic study on gender issues in shipping. One of the aims of GECAMET research represents the understanding of human factors considering gender equality and cultural awareness issues met in the shipping industry. In this paper are published qualitative results obtained through 47 structured online interviews of women seafarers made in the period 201‐2018. The target group of respondents was formed by women leaders in the shipping sector which are current seafarers with careers on board ship. Other data collected involved leaders defined as ex-seafarers working in managerial positions working on shore. Results of the interviews provide an excellent source of inspirational leadership. Data obtained is useful for women seafarers that need models and motivational aid to join maritime education and maritime careers, and to surpass any future challenges. Data is also helpful for shipping organizations and MET to improve equal and adequate access to women to seafarer careers on board ship. The research was possible with the support of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU) and the Nippon Foundation in Japan.

This paper aims to introduce GIS, its definition, principle, application in any discipline particularly maritime, its process, data sets and features and its benefits to maritime and universities. Specifically, the paper intends to provide an overview of its wide applications in maritime including but not limited to marine transportation, marine environment, port management and operation, maritime education and training (MET) and maritime research. GIS simplest task is in mapping and visualization. But its most important function is in spatial analysis. Spatial analysis takes into account the location, geometry, topology, and relationships of geographic data, which lend itself to intelligent decision making. GIS is not just for researchers and students. GIS is especially useful for decision makers such as: managers, administrators, and directors of large and small projects. Scenarios are “seen” and analyzed even before events happen. To planners and decision makers, this is very important because they can assess the impact of events or scenario and may save a lot of time, effort, and money before implementing the actual project. An additional skill on GIS when learned or thought would certainly result to a technically competent maritime global workforce. The paper would provide ideas on possible areas for collaborations among TransNav member institutions for data sharing which may be processed and analyzed by a GIS specialist.
