At the beginning of the 20 th c there were created in Cracow theatre house and community centres which ran their activities in buildings not well fit for this function. It was possible to satisfy the functional requirements of such objects only with the application of new technologies and building materials (steel and ferroconcrete). An example of such an object is the multi-functional building in Straszewskiego 18 in Kraków. It was designed by Józef Pokutyński, an architect, on the commission of Cardinal Adam Sapieha. It is a stately edifice, still well maintained, the seat of the State Philharmonic since 1945
