Analysis of previously available stratigraphic data coupled with the re-interpretation of seismic profiles calibrated by boreholes has allowed the construction of a new tectonic model of evolution of the Gdów “embayment” – a tectonic re-entrant located along the Carpathian front east of Kraków (southern Poland). This model shows that the main phase of localized fault-controlled subsidence took place in the Early Badenian and was associated with deposition of the locally overthickened Skawina Formation. Also, deposition of evaporites of the Wieliczka Formation seems to have been tectonically controlled by local basement faulting. Supra-evaporitic siliciclastic deposits have developed as a result of overall north-directed sediment progradation from the eroded Carpathian belt towards the Carpathian Foredeep. During the final stages of development of the Carpathian fold-and-thrust wedge the previously subsiding Gdów “embayment” area was uplifted and basement faults were reactivated either as reverse faults or as low angle thrust faults. Along the leading edge of this inverted structure a triangle zone developed, with backthrusting along the evaporitic level. As a result, overthickened evaporites, formed in local tectonically-controlled depressions within the area of the Gdów “embayment” area have been strongly folded and internally deformed.

The presence of computers with the specific medical tools implemented is increasing permanently. The specificity of medical doctors work shall be taken into account by specialists in programming thus the close collaboration is necessary to make the programs compatible to doctors expectations. The most complicated is the lack of systems communication. The network system satisfying doctors expectations seems to make the collaboration with programmers much easier particularly in the issue of confidence. The discussion and mutual exchange of opinions seems to be critical for interdisciplinary collaboration in this field. Large scale computing is of special interest for infectious diseases. The access to the net system and to data bases in the scale of the whole globe is of particular importance for AIDS outbreak. The variability of this virus traced in the planet scale may make possible the prediction of the prospective mutants enabling preparation of therapeutic (pharmacological) treatments in advance. This is why the access to the large scale net system based on grid system seems to be promising in the strategy of the AIDS therapeutic system.

Referaty przedstawione w trakcie spotkań zostały opublikowane w licznych wydanych materiałach konferencyjnych, wymienionych przy końcu artykułu.

Polish Salt Mining Association was established in 1991. During almost 15 years of its activity 9 Association Meetings took place in several salt mines. The papers presented during these meetings have been published in numerous conference proceedings (listed below).

W ciągu ostatnich kilku lat światowa produkcja soli przekraczała 200 000 000 t/rok. Wydobycie soli w Polsce w roku 1998 wynosiło 3 306 000 t. Ponad 50% światowej produkcji zużywane jest jako surowiec dla przemysłu chemicznego. Główne zadania przemysłu chemicznego to: eliminacja zaburzeń chorobowych wynikłych z niedoboru jodu, składowanie odpadów niebezpiecznych i odpadów przemysłowych, podziemne magazynowanie węglowodorów, nowa rola kopalń soli (działalność turystyczna, uzdrowiskowa i kulturalna).

During last few years world production of the rock salt exceeded 200 000 000 t/y. Production of salt in Poland in 1998 was as high as 3 306 000 t. Over 50% of world production is used as a raw material for the chemical industry. The main tasks of the salt industry are: Iodine Deficiency Disorder elimination, salt and human health, disposal of hazardous and industrial waste products, underground storage of hydrocarbons, new role of the salt mines (touristic, balneotherapeutic and cultural purposes).

Profile otworów wiertniczych wykonanych w okolicy Wojnicza w latach 1960- 1973 dostarczyły nowych danych o występowaniu złoża solnego. Ponad złożem zalegają osady ilasto-piaszczyste warstw chodenickich i grabowieckich. Reprezentowane są one przez ciemnoszare iły, iłowce oraz iłołupki margliste z przewarstwieniami piasków i piaskowców. Osady te zawierają rozproszoną substancję organiczną w różnych formach (m.in. detrytus roślinny, zwęglone fragmenty roślin) oraz wykazują znaczną zawartość metanu. Zawartość metanu w warstwach nadkładu złoża solnego Wojnicz wykazuje związek z rozproszoną substancją organiczną, występującą w formie detrytusu roślinnego. Maksymalna zawartość substancji organicznej wynosi 9,3% wag., a metanu 25,5%. Dla porównania przedstawiono również zawartość substancji organicznej i metanowość w osadach serii solnej oraz w warstwach skawińskich jednostki autochtonicznej i allochtonicznej

Drillings completed in the vicinity of Wojnicz in the years 1960-1973 provided new data on the salt deposit. The overburden includes clayey-sandy Chodenice and Grabowiec Beds - dark-grey clays, claystones and marly clayey shales intercalated with sands. These sediments contain dispersed organic matter in the form of plant detritus, carbonized plant relies, eta, and reveal high methane concentrations. Methane contents in the overburden of the Wojnicz deposit are related to the dispersed plant detritus. Maximum content of organic matter reaches 9.3 wt. % and that of methane is 25.5%. For comparison, organic matter and methane concentrations in salt series and in Skawina Beds of allo- and autochthonous units were presented

Celem prowadzonych prac było określenie budowy geologicznej czapy anhydrytowej oraz nadkładu wysadu solnego " Damaslawek". Podstawowym narzędziem badawczym były wysokorozdzielcze dane sejsmiki refleksyjnej. Dodatkowo wykonano pomiary i interpretację danych geoelektrycznych, oraz reinterpretację archiwalnych danych grawimetrycznych i geofizyki otworowej. Uzyskane dane sejsmiczne charakteryzowały się wysoką jakością. Zintegrowana interpretacja geofizyczno-geologiczna pozwoliła na bardzo precyzyjne określenie głównych i podrzędnych deformacji tektonicznych, rozwiniętych w obrębie czapy oraz w jej nadkładzie. Zidentyfikowano wiele reaktywowanych uskoków inwersyjnych, które najprawdopodobniej przynajmniej częściowo były związane z ruchami przesuwczymi. Analiza sejsmostratygraficzno-tektoniczna pokazała, iż niektóre strefy uskokowe były aktywne również w czwartorzędzie.

The goal of completed research project was to establish reliable geological model of cap rock and overburden of the "Damaslawek" salt dome. High-resolution reflection seismic profiling was main research method used for this project. Additionally, geoelectrical profiling and interpretation as well as reinterpretation of available gravity and well log data was completed. Acquired seismic data were of very high quality. Integrated geophysical-geological interpretation allowed the major and subordinate tectonic deformations present within cap rock and salt dome ś overburden to be precisely distinguished. Numerous inversion faults possibly at least partly related to strike-slip movements were identified. Seismostratigraphic-tectonic analysis showed that some of identified fault zones were active also during the Quaternary.
