Swelling is a phenomenon which occurs in high plasticity soils. It is observed immediately after the contact of not fully saturated expansive soil with water. In clays of very small coefficient of permeability, it may be concluded that swelling is a surface phenomenon - water does not need to infiltrate deep into the clay layer for swelling to start. The so-called active-wetting zone may be observed in the soil layer where the swelling process takes place. The soil conditions in the zone change during swelling and consequently result in changes in the soil strength and deformation properties. In the paper the results of swelling pressure tests are presented and analysed. The tests were carried out in oedometers. Based on the test results, the range of the active-wetting zone in the tested samples was analysed, taking into account index properties of tested soils, as well as orientation of tested samples.

The paper presents results of interlaboratory comparative test programme. The minimum dry density tests were performed according to PN-B-04481:1988, for four different sands and two types of solid-glass beads, by two laboratories, seven lab workers, using nine different types of funnel. The aim of this research is analysis of the results of the determination of minimum dry density to clarify the provisions of the standardPN-B-04481:1988. The main objectives are to: determine the influence of the geometry of the funnel used to test the minimum dry density on the test results; analyse the human factor on the test results; try to determine the geometrical criteria for funnels used to test the minimum dry density.

Dobór adekwatnego modelu gruntu i jego parametrów jest podstawową kwestią w szacowaniu przemieszczeń ścian. W artykule oceniono efektywność metod określania modułu odkształcenia E. Wykonano obliczenia na modelu numerycznym metodą elementów skończonych programem PLAXIS w celu określenia przemieszczeń ścian szczelinowych. Obliczenia wykonano, różnicując moduł odkształcenia warstwy iłów, i zweryfikowano je z rzeczywistymi pomiarami.

The choice of appropriate constitutive model and its parameters are main problem in assessing displacements of walls. In this paper the effectiveness of the modulus of elasticity determination methods was estimated. The calculations were carried out on number of models using the Finite Elements Method in PLAXIS software. The aim of this procedure was to estimate the displacements of the diaphragm wall. The calculations were made by differentiation of the modulus of elasticity of clays and by verifying it with real measurements.
