Studies of a series of solid phase alpha-monochloro substituted regioregular 3-octylthiophenes (n-OT) were carried out under electrochemical conditions. Thin films of the corresponding oligomer cast on Au or Pt electrode were polarized within the potential range where the oligomers undergo from the neutral reduced molecules to the form of cation radical. In situ AFM images of the thin films of 60T revealed reversible, drastic changes of the film morphology while applied potential was switched between values corresponding to the particular redox state. Dimerization of the oligomers and pi-stacks formation is postulated to explain the observed morphology changes of the 60T films.
