Metal complexes of (3-p-chlorophenoxymethyl-4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-yl-thio) acetyl hydrazine [L1] and N-(3-p-chlorophenoxymethyl-4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazole-5-yl-thio acetyl)glycyl hydrazide [L2] were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR and volumetric titration. It was shown that metal:ligand ratios are 1:1. Conductometric measurements of 0.001 M solution in DMSO reveal the non-electrolytic behavior. The thermal analysis (DTA/TG) indicates that the Cu(II) complexes contain 2H2O molecules as water of crystallization, whereas 2H2O in Ni(II), Co(II) and Zn(II) complexes were found as water of coordination. The magnetic moment and electronic spectral data are consistent with an octahedral structure for Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes and square planar for Cu(II) complex. The synthesized compounds were screened for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. Correlation of the structure-activity relationship revealed the importance of complex formation for exhibiting a higher level of antimicrobial activity.
