Content available remote Integrated geophysical survey on the ancient Deák Ferenc Sluice of Hungary

The west channel of the ancient Deák Ferenc which was constructed in 1875 in Hungary was used for controlling the water amount and the east channel was used for the shipping. In the study, four geophysical nondestructive methods were used to this old channel which needs the restoration and reinforcement works. The high-frequency seismic and acoustic measurements were carried out, the resistivity measurements were carried out to map the resistivity distribution of the slab, the seismic direct wave method was used to map the seismic velocities for understanding the stability conditions of the walls and the ground penetrating radar measurements were carried out on the slab and on the walls. The results of integrated study showed us that voids, faults and cracks were detected and the inhomogeneous construction materials were used in the slab. The obtained results emerged that the usage of nondestructive geophysical methods is essential in all stages of restoration and reinforcement works, especially for the ancient structures.

Content available Chemical etching of Nitinol stents

At present the main cause of death originates from cardiovascular diseases. Primarily the most frequent cause is vessel closing thus resulting in tissue damage. The stent can help to avoid this. It expands the narrowed vessel section and allows free blood flow. The good surface quality of stents is important. It also must have adequate mechanical characteristics or else it can be damaged which can easily lead to the fracture of the implant. Thus, we have to consider the importance of the surface treatment of these implants. In our experiments the appropriate design was cut from a 1.041 mm inner diameter and 0.100 mm wall thickness nitinol tube by using Nd:YAG laser device. Then, the stent was subjected to chemical etching. By doing so, the burr created during the laser cutting process can be removed and the surface quality refined. In our research, we changed the time of chemical etching and monitored the effects of this parameter. The differently etched stents were subjected to microscopic analysis, mass measurement and in vivo environment tests. The etching times that gave suitable surface and mechanical features were identified.

Content available Transport safety of ŽSR level crossings

Railway transport is one of processes controlled with a certain level of risk. It is apparent that due to a limited level of our knowledge, the technical level and limited funds we cannot count on absolute safety (zero risk) but we must admit that in a real technical system some error or fault may occur and its occurrence may mean a certain risk for the controlled process. The authors focus on proposing and presenting potentially usable measures that could increase the safety of traffic operation at the level crossings operated by the ŽSR (Slovak Railways). Technical and organizational measures are discussed separately. Some of proposed measures are specific for Slovak conditions only, however, to a certain extent some findings can be generalized and possibly applied in other countries, too.

Signal circuits are an important part of the interlocking system. The main role of the signalling circuit is to switch the required signal aspects and signal checking. A signal is an interface between the interlocking system and a driver of the railway vehicle. Light bulbs are mostly used as a light source in most types of interlocking systems. It is possible to think about alternative light sources within the context of modernisation of the interlocking systems. The use of alternative light sources using must not cause signal circuit safety degradation. The article deals with problems of light bulbs replacement for another light source in AŽD 71 type relay interlocking in the Railways of Slovak Republic.
