The future of the THERMIT technology is characterised by improved ductility characteristic and high resistance weld metal. Different procedures will be made available to he market. First, a new composed THERMIT steel of low carbon and manganese contents but high silicon and chromium contents results in troostite / bainite structure combined with high ductile and wear resistance characteristics. Moreover, a new process called 2-components welding offers the advantages similar to those of head hardened rails, a flexible foot and a flexible web whereas the head of the weld is of high strength. Optional, a heat treatment to the rail foot can be applied which corresponds to the normalisation of the weld. Last not least, a heat treatment carried out the running surface is presented as most suitable when welding head hardened rails.
