One of the basic hazards existing on workstations in foundries and welding is a burn as a result of contact with molten metal splashes. That is why to ensure the safety of mentioned group of workers very important is a usage of a proper legs and foot protective equipment. These equipment should ensure an adequate level of protection taking into account exsisting hazards. The protective properties of such footwear should be confirmedin the normalised laboratory tests. In 2010 a new European standard was published (EN ISO 20349), which describes the requirements and test methods for footwear protecting against thermal risks, among others molten metal splashes. In the paper the test methods and assessment criteria were described according to European standard provisions.

In respect to footwear of protective properties used in occupational conditions as well as footwear of other purposes (e.g. for daily private use, sport footwear), one of basic users demands is a good comfort of its use. From this point of view the important property of footwear is a shock and energy absorption capasity, especially while moving when shock and trips risk exists. It is important not to transfer the energy to other parts of human body and in consequence not to cause a risk of injury. In order to ensure energy absorption by footwear an adequate materials shall be used in its design, of which properties are impartially confirmed by laboratory tests.
