New York is a City of endless changes which are visible on every step; numerous of cranes visibe in the panorama shows that the economical crisis is a history. A lot is being built but the most spectacular architecture comes from the public utility creations. What is modern public utility architecture of New York City? What defines that architecture? Towards which direction does it tend? What is the mainstream function? Do buildings designed by leading architects set trends or maybe it is only demonstration of power and abilities? Does the confrontation of buildings from other parts of the world with New York City architecture give characteristics of resemblance or dissimilarity?

Nowy Jork jest miastem bezustannych przemian, zmienia swoje oblicze, co widoczne jest na każdym kroku. Dziesiątki dźwigów widocznych w panoramie miasta świadczą o tym, że kryzys gospodarczy to już historia. Buduje się dużo, jednak najbardziej spektakularna architektura to ta związana z użytecznością publiczną. Jaka jest współczesna architektura użyteczności publicznej Nowego Jorku? Co ją cechuje, w jakim kierunku zmierza? Jaka funkcja jest dominująca? Czy obiekty projektowane przez czołowych architektów na świecie wyznaczają nowe trendy? A może to „pokaz sił” i umiejętności? Czy w konfrontacji z obiektami poznanymi w innych częściach świata architekturę Nowego Jorku cechuje odmienność czy raczej podobieństwo w jej kształtowaniu?

Powstało wiele obiektów współczesnej architektury, których detal w sposób czytelny, wyznacza rytmy na elewacji, tworzy jedyny w swoim rodzaju zapis muzyczny, w którym zamiast nut kompozytor-architekt zastosował detal architektoniczny, a elewacja budynku stała się swoistą pięciolinią.

There have been many buildings of modern architecture which clearly detail and mark out rhythms on the façade creating a unique musical notation in which, instead of notes, the composer-architect applies architectural detail and the elevation of the building has become a kind of stave.

Bycie w przestrzeni miasta to splot wzajemnych relacji człowieka z miastem, to wielowątkowy dialog niemający końca. To swoisty palimpsest, którego wcześniejszy zapis często został już tylko w formie przeżytych emocji, doznań, więzi społecznych wcześniejszych pokoleń, śladów w strukturze miasta. To tradycja, zwyczaje, styl życia i w końcu świadomość, bez której nie można by mówić o tożsamości. Wszystko to przekazywane kolejnym pokoleniom kształtuje nasz byt, gdyż miasto to oprócz takich wyznaczników w przestrzeni jak ulica, dom, plac, fontanna, to również pozamaterialne doświadczanie miasta.

Being in a city expanse is a coincidence of mutual relations of a man and a city, this is a never-ending, multithread dialog. That is peculiar palimpsest which previous record has been registered only by a form of outlived emotions, experiences, social bonds of prior generations and marks in a structure of a city. That is tradition, customs, life style and last but not least that is consciousness without which there is no identity. All that, passed on next generations forms our being because a city apart from streets, houses, squares and fountains that is also an immaterial experience.

In the context of objective truth myth, which has been abolished by science, there is creative freedom obtained which concedes ambiguous acting and ipso facto gives admittance for far.reaching arbitrariness in justifying artistic assumptions. Creators are focused on searching for their own creations certain models for their creative activities; they form a theory of their own work in discontinuous way because each time a theory becomes appropriate for each artistic idea. Therefore, the perception has become clear to all concerned that all the canons we had won so far within experience of temporariness and superfluity of established values and concepts became effaced. In addition, again there is an accompanying feeling of lack of acknowledgement for objective significance in using general predicates such as symbolic, semiotic, representative, stylistic, traditional... Permanent experimentation to prove that art tends towards feasible entities. Michael Walzer tries to curb the situation by finding justification for those pluralistic acts in a matter of esthetic approbation for dissimilarity, which is being treated as cultural form expressing variety of this world and functional approbation if dissimilarity is necessary condition for human development and gives sense to his autonomy.

Is a city in 21 century still going to be a basic place of exchanging information, transfering designs and a center of formating ideas? Quite realative demographic stabilization gives a possibility of arranging man's environment. However, invalid and passing rules of arranging become and unavoidable process. Many utopias have basically accepted arganizing a model of ideal society into a municipal community with hope that a harmony of the environmenta and human activities will remove social problems. M. Webber has shown that a concrete place becomes more and more unimportant in modern world, because of changing dimensions and reaches of communication. It appears that all orders of formatting a place stopped to be a technical necessity and in main measurehave became depended on psychological needs. So what is the desirable vision and design for a social world? Relationships between man's world and conditions and spatial features are far away from the uniformity and synonymous. Here they appear essential methodoligical questiones eg: whether to research for some general designs of that mobility in each social category, or else to concentrate on personal, particular attainments? In 70-ies a city began to be seen as a place of human activities and a place for imagination to be used there. The city became a place in where the important thing is a connection of past and present which contains signs and symbols giving a sense of identity and an nhibition's appendages.
