Flood phenomena occurring country-wide in the last years cause a great threat to human life and health, high material losses, often impossible to reproduce. This applies to national cultural goods or constituting world heritage. Floods may affect large areas, or they may be local, caused by raised level of small watercourses, including drainage systems. In view of the recurring threat of flooding, especially in spring and autumn, as well as the needs of the National Headquarters of the State Fire Service related to those phenomena, The Institute of Security Technologies MORATEX” has developed under the project „Optimization of procedures, bases dislocation and improvement of technical solutions for equipment in use among Polish emergency services when dealing with natural hazards, especially flooding (the anti-flood sleeves)”, acronym ZYWIOL (eng. ELEMENT) the structural guidelines for the technology demonstrator in the form of a Specialised Anti-Flood Set, consisting of the mobile rescue equipment including the anti-flood sleeves by combining them in a separable manner with the specialised transportation mean - the amphibious vehicle. In addition, the Anti-flood Set was extended with a trailer adapted to carry the anti-flood equipment collected within the project.

The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of the main pressing parameter, i.e. temperature of a ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibrous sheet Dyneema ® HB26, on the performance of resultant UHMWPE-fibre reinforced polymer matrix composites intended for the manufacturing of ballistic personal protection. The main goal of this research was to connect the pressing temperature of the initial polyethylene fibrous material and the main performance feature, i.e. the ballistic behaviour of the resultant composites. The polyethylene composites, designed at various temperatures, were subjected to testing of ballistic, mechanical, thermal (DSC) and structural (FTIR) properties, as well as the surface topography by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Attempts were made to determine the correlation between ballistic and mechanical properties of the various types of polyethylene composites designed and their structural and surface properties. Phenomena accompanying the pressing process of the fibrous polyethylene composites at various temperatures are discussed along with attempts to estimate the mechanisms of changes. This research allowed for the determination of optimal pressing conditions for fibrous polyethylene material to obtain a composite with optimal features for ballistic and personal protection application.

The aim of the research was to develop a new concept of hybride composite armour systems consisting of a ceramic and fibrous composite. Depending on the requirements for ballistic protection, armour systems may be designed to various configurations and weights based on the most suitable ceramic materials and backing. The article describes the development of a hybrid ceramic - multi-layered ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) composite armour made from silicon carbide (SiC) or aluminium oxide (Al2O3) of different thicknesses (3.0, 3.5, 4.0, 4.5, 17.27 and 13.35 mm) and shapes (hexagonal and cylindrical) in combination with a polyethylene fibrous composite. Additionally research work developed a confinement system for the hybrid ceramic - multi-layered UHMWPE composite armour which significantly improves the ballistic performance of composite armour by creation of a uniform compression condition of the ceramic and by reducing its fragmentation upon impact. The ballistic armour strength was tested according to the PN-V-87000:2011, NIJ 0101.04 standard and NATO STANAG 4569 (AEP-55 Vol.1) standard for protection against more than one shot (multi-hit). The hybrid ceramic - multi-layered UHMWPE composite armour was combined with basic fibrous ballistic armours which exhibited a ballistic strength compatible with level IIIA according to the NIJ 0101.04 standard and classes K2 and O3 according to the PN-V-87000: 2011 standard.

The main aim of the work was to develop a hybrid bullet- and fragment proof helmet protecting the user’s head against small arm ammunition and fragments as well as mechanical impacts. In the construction of the shell, the latest generation of ballistic materials were used, developed on the basis of para-amide fabric coated with a thermosetting resin and high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The idea of the study was based on the thesis that the stable connection of two types of fibrous materials differing in their structure, topography as well as in the type of the polymer (para-aramid and polyethylene) will increase the ballistic resistance as well as allow to reduce the mass of the final products. The results of research in the field of the screening of fibrous materials, the process of elaboration as well as the design of bullet- and fragment-proof hybrid helmets are also presented. The ballistic helmets designed were verified within the wide scope of requirements described in PN-V-87001:2011 as well as in the NIJ Standards.

The main goal of this research was to develop a method of predicting the durability of soft ballistic inserts made of a high-strength composite based on polyethylene ultra-high molecular weight (UHMWPE) fibres. The research presents a program of tests on the simulated use of composite ballistic inserts elaborated in order to predict the durability as well as changes in the ballistic, physical and mechanical properties occurring due to conditions of use. The research program took the following three procedures of the aging simulation of the ballistic inserts into account: procedure 1 – applying a mechanical load to the insert; procedure 2 – applying a mechanical load along with a temperature cycle to the insert; procedure 3 – applying a mechanical load, temperature cycle and liquid solution simulating human perspiration to the insert. The procedures were verified experimentally by examining inserts made out of soft composite polyethylene Dyneema® SB 21. Also verification by means of the Snedecor’s F-test was carried out. It was shown that the effect of mechanical loading, temperature cycling, and the solution simulating human perspiration influences the progress of degradation of the polyethylene material. The research work included testing new ballistic inserts made of a polyethylene composite, as well as ones subjected to simulation ageing. To investigate the correlation between the natural ageing process and the simulated one, ballistic inserts used under natural conditions for 5, 7, 9 and 13 years were examined. Selected samples were used for the determination of mechanical and ballistic property variation as well as changes in their chemical structure. Changes in the microstructure of the ballistic material were assessed by DSC analysis and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR).

Wnioskowanie odnośnie zmian stanu technicznego wyrobów balistycznych pod wpływem warunków przechowywania i użytkowania wymagało zweryfikowania opracowanej metodyki badawczej i przeprowadzenia badań uwzględniających metodę przyspieszonego starzenia.
W artykule przedstawiono wycinek wyników prac związanych z opracowaniem kulo- i odłamkoodpornego hełmu z czerepem z kompozytu hybrydowego wykonanym na bazie włókien aramidowych TWARON® i polietylenowych DYNEEMA®. The article shows part of research results on creating bullet- and fragment-proof helmet made of hybrid composite based on aramide TWARON™ and polyethylene DYNEEMA™ fibers. Production technology as well as results of ballistic tests of different material arrangements are shown. Results are presented in comparison with tensile strength of homogeneous composite (polyethylene and aramid) and on the interface of aramid and polyethylene which is the measure of consistency of materials. Degree of composite structure sustainability was evaluated using ΔV velocity which is set when determining the V50 ballistic limit and is the difference between highest velocity of Fragment Simulating Projectile (FSP) for which partial armor penetration has occurred and lowest velocity of that fragment for which complete armor perforation was observed.

PMHS and PMFHS of linear and branched random structures: MD22DH10M, MD66DH10M, MD40(TPhM)10(TPhOH)10DH10M, MD42(TPhOH)5DH10M, MD42(TPhOH)10DH10M and MD42(TPhM)5(TPhOH)5DH10M (where: M = Me3SiO0.5, D = Me2SiO, DH = MeHSiO, TPhOH = O0.5(C6H5)Si(OH)O0.5, TPhM = O0.5(C6H5)Si(OSi Me3O0.5) were synthesized by hydrolytic polycondensation of appropriate chlorosilanes. Chemical structure and tacticity of PMHS were analyzed using NMR spectroscopy (Fig. 1-4). The content of Si-H groups was determined by iodometric titration (according to Westermark-Schowen procedure). Elastomer and rubber blends, without fillers or containing them (Zeosil 45, Sipernat 310 or precipitated calcium carbonate), were prepared by addition of stoichiometric amounts of crosslinking agent and catalyst in order to obtain 2-3 mm thick layers. Their gelation times, measured at room temperature, increased with a decrease in Si-H bonds content in crosslinking agent (Fig. 5). Tensile strength (Rr) and relative elongation at break (er) were measured for solid (non-porous) samples (Fig. 6-10). Vulcanizates prepared of Polastosil M-2000 filled with: Sipernat 310 (for 10 wt. %: Rr = 1.30-0.62 MPa, er = 170-310 %), calcium carbonate (for 10-20 wt. %: Rr = 0.62-0.83 MPa, er = 150-180 %), and mixtures of Zeosil 45 with CaCO3 showed the best mechanical properties.
