In September 2005 Zamość hosted a conference organized on the 400th anniversary of the death of Jan Zamojski, the city's founder. Among the conference publications there are two articles on the historic cartography of Zamość (M. Sirko 2005, J. Zygawski 2005). The article aims to present the cartographers contribution into the history of Zamość between the 17th and 20th centuries. The catalogues of maps and city plans which have been prepared until today are not final. From time to time we learn about newly discovered maps, official registry plans or copies. At the same time there appear new names which have not been known before. Collected cartographic materials were ordered and divided into five periods important for the city's history (1580-1699, 1700-1771, 1772-1808, 1809-1866, 1867-1939). The first period was for Zamość the time of crystallization of city structure, economic life, investment in construction but also siege and war destruction. That period in the city's history demanded detailed maps. The oldest cartographic representation of Zamość is The plan of the Market (no scale) dated for the years 1603-1604. The woodcut from 1774 published in Jonsac's Historie des Stanislas Jablonowski in 1:4000 is considered to be the most true. The years 1700-1771 were very unstable in the city's history. In 1704 there appeared Zamojsc. Hwilken Hans Kongi May Konung Carl den XII... Fig. 2 published by Swedes, considered to be the most precise at the time. Several other plans were published by Germans. The third period (1772-1808), because of the partition of Poland, links Zamość with the kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria. The first known city plan from the period of Austrian partition (1772) was prepared by F. Buzogany in scale 1:3000. For obvious reasons the plans' authors were military officers and surveyors. In the common opinion the best was Erstes Zaichrungs-Blat. Plan von der Festung Novi Zamość in der Konigreich Galizien nebst der um selbe auf 6, bis 700 Klaftern liegende Gegend in scale 1:1700 from 1777. The years 1809-1866 are the final period of the existing city form. However the cartographic activity at that time showed intense development thanks to the authors of plans and maps such as J.Ch. Mallet-Malletski, L. Jodko, M. Hauke, J.P. Lelewel and K. Bojanowski. The last period covers the years 1867-1939. Especially noteworthy are the works of surveyors employed in Ordynacja Zamojska (G. Sochacki, K. Pożerski, J. Widenko) and the architects working in the regional administration offices (W. Sienicki, W. Lucht, E. Kranz, J. Margules, T. Zaremba, W. Wieczorkiewicz).

The life of Professor Franciszek Uhorczak (1902-1981: the 100th anniversary of his bithday occurred in February 2002) can be divided into two periods. The first was connected with the Lvov geographical center, and the other with the University of Maria Skłodowska-Curie (UMCS) in Lublin. In 1932 he received a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of geography, for his thesis "On the methodology of settlement research". The War years he spent in Lvov and came back to Poland in 1946. For two years he lectured cartography and anthropogeography at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow. In 1949 he moved to Lublin, where he headed the Chair of Economic Geopraphy, and worked in a local Commission of Regional Planning until 1952. Professor's scientific output is rich and diverse. As a result of constant research he realized forward-looking and often controversial works. His bibliography includes over 170 titles (J.Gurba 1972, J. Ostrowski 1982). Many of his works, especially maps remained unpublished. For him a map was a tool of research. Thematic cartography, especially socio-economic was his main field of interest. Many topics he developed throughout his life, e.g. the widely understood problems of isarithmic maps. Here one should mention the concept of the field of reference - he innovatively introduced moved circle fields, formulated the rule of interpolation triangles as a condition of correct interpolation and introduced fractured isarithms. Franciszek Uhorczak conducted research on every type of isolines, among which equidistants occupy a special place. He used them in his research on settlement when still in Lvov. Equidistants drawn around dwellings made it possible to obtain from topographic maps a geographically faithful picture of the range of settlement, which could then be transferred into a smaller scale. In his Lublin period he applied this method in General Map of Land Use in Poland as well as in a multisheet Map of World Settlement in 1:1 000 000. He won public acclaim for his original cartographic approach to the maps in the 5-volume "Popular Geography" edited by PWN (Polish Scientific Publishers), and especially 19 landscape maps in the last three volumes. Professor had an exceptional ability to compute numeral indexes and use them in tables and diagrams. Among his more important works in which he used this ability is Physical Geography in Numbers, so co-authored with J. Staszewski. It is a unique compendium which comprises a rich systematically classified volume of phenomena and processes which take place on Earth (1139 tables with approximately 150 000 figures). Mathematical "roots" are also presented in several new methods of graphic presentation, which he suggested, such as hypsographoid, tablegram, statistical anaglyph, cartographic method of concentration and cartotypogram. The last two of them were especially well received. Professor had wide knowledge not only of cartography and geography, but also of statistics, economy and history. He had an extensive library and one of the biggest private cartography collection in Poland. His cheerfulness and friendly attitude won him popular sympathy. In the Chair of Cartography which he headed he managed to create an exceptional, almost family atmosphere.

Thirty years passed in 1998 since the launch of the "Polish Cartographical Review". It is a good opportunity to prepare a statistical and graphic analysis of the content of the already published volumes containing 6,281 pages (114 numbers, including 6 double-sized). The periodical contains the following permanent sections: Articles and Notes, Reviews, Editorial News, Reports as well as Occasional Publications. The section of Articles and Notes occupies more than half of the total content of the quaterly, numbering 554 items published over that period, the majority of which (over 20%) being devoted to the history of cartography, especially to the history of Polish cartography. A number of papers fall into the theory of cartography group. Almost 8% of them are devoted to thematic cartography. Also, some papers on computer cartography appeared. Almost 70% of them have been published over the last eight years, although single papers on computer cartography appeared since the very beginning of the periodical. Over 12% of the total number of papers contain reports on Polish and international cartographic activities. Over the 30-year period of the periodical's existence 405 reviews have been published, devoted both to cartographic literature (36%) and to maps and atlases. International publications have been reviewed much more often. However, as to the map reviews, Polish maps are reviewed much more often. The Editorial News sections systematically reports on recent atlases, maps and cartographic literature. Over 14 thousand items are listed in this section, of which cartographic literature comprises 60% of the total. The Reports section comprises the largest number of articles published in our periodical. It is a chronicle of the most vital events in Polish and International cartography. Among the national events activities of the Cartographic Commission of the Polish Geographical Society were most often reported on. As to the international events the focus in on the ICA activities. Authors affiliated to Warsaw institutions and companies contributed the largest number of papers. Both the majority of authors and institutions they represented originated from Warsaw. Also, we have had 30 non-Polish authors so far. Finally, the continuous process of improving the graphic quality of the "Polish Cartographic Review" should also be noticed.
