Eclipsing Binary Stars in the OGLE-III Fields of the Small Magellanic Cloud

We present a large sample of eclipsing binary stars detected in the Small Magellanic Cloud fields covering about 14 square degrees that have been monitored for eight years during the third phase of the OGLE survey. This is the largest set of such variables containing 6138 objects, of which 777 are contact and 5361 non-contact binaries. The estimated completeness of this sample is around 82%. We analyze the statistical properties of the sample and present selected interesting objects: 32 systems having eccentric orbit with visible apsidal motion, one Transient Eclipsing Binary, ten RS CVn type stars, 22 still unexplained Double-Periodic Variable stars, and 15 candidates for doubly eclipsing quadruple systems. Based on the OGLE-III proper motions, we classified 47 binaries from our sample as foreground Galactic stars. We also list candidates suitable for the SMC distance determination.

Nasze wody śródlądowe są piękne. Niewielu jednak korzysta z ich nadzwyczajnych walorów, ponieważ szczególnie rzeki nie są przygotowane i przystosowane do turystycznego wykorzystania. Polska jest „korkiem" na mapie dróg wodnych Europy. Trzeba to zmienić. Redakcja będzie patronowała wszelkim akcjom zmierzającym do zmiany tego niekorzystnego obrazu pod hasłem „nasze wody dostępne i przyjazne dia turystyki". Akcję rozpoczynamy publikacją artykułu, w którym na przykładzie Bydgoskiego Węzła Wodnego (BWW) wskazano kierunki działań zmierzających do przystosowania dróg wodnych i rzek z zabudową hydrotechniczną do funkcji turystycznych. Wg Autora zadaniem priorytetowym powinna być ochrona budowli hydrotechnicznych jako obiektów dziedzictwa kulturowego.

Our inland waters are beautifui, but only few tourists can enjoy their extraordinary values because those waters and particularly the rivers are not adepted to requirements of the tourist use. Poland is a „cork" on the map of European water ways. It is necessary to change this situation. The editorial team of the Gospodarka Wodna will patronize all the actions aiming at getting change in the present disadvantageous image under the watchword „our waters accessible and friendly to the tourism". We begin that action by publication of the paper which points out the directions for activities aiming at adaptation of water ways and rivers built over with hydrotechnical objects to requirements of the tourism. According to the opinion of the Author the protection of hydrotechnical buildings as objects of cultural heritage should be a task of top priority.
