Magnesium alloys are getting more important in industrial application. The paper discus thermal, melting and handling properties of magnesium alloys with regard to safety issues. Practical links and recommendations for safe handling and avoiding danger of burning magnesium during production of parts are mentioned. The paper touches finally the problem of extinguishing of a burning car containing magnesium parts.

Przyczynek dotyczy problematyki wytwarzania i eksploatacji części maszyn wykonanych z materiałów magnezowych w relacji bezpieczeństwa, wynikającego z faktu możliwości reagowania tego metalu z wodą z wydzielaniem ciepła. Możliwości bezpiecznego postępowania i zapobieżenia szkód oraz sposób gaszenia płonącego magnezu są przedmiotem dyskusji w tym artykule.

The EU has recently established new legal requirements for the European automotive industry with respect to the end of live vehicle, introduced restrictions for environmental impact like carbon dioxide production and pedestrian safety enhanced requirements. With the entry into the EU not only new imported cars for the polish market but also the polish domestic car production require to take enhanced performance and limitations into consideration. The paper describes more particular the regulations and impacted materials and components.

W referacie opisano ostatnio wprowadzone przepisy ograniczające zastosowanie metali ciężkich w materiałach i tworzywach samochodowych, przeznaczonych na rynek Unii Europejskiej. Z chwilą wejścia Polski do Unii w 2004 roku nie tylko nowe importowane samochody przeznaczone na rynek krajowy, lecz także krajowa produkcja samochodowa, jak i części zamiennych na rynek wewnętrzny oraz unijny będzie musiała stosować się do wspomnianych ograniczeń.

The paper touches the overall advantages and obstacles for light component magnesium application. Future potential for cast, extruded and sheet metal magnesium components have been shown. Development issues and testing of a magnesium die cast instrument panel cross-car beam introduced into a medium class car with high production volume will be discussed in particular. Introductory pre-selection for the designing of a magnesium engine block has been included.
