Shear tests and microstructural investigations have been performed on two grades of commercial aluminium alloys (3004 and 5182) used in can making, in order to compare their ability to strain localization during cold working. It was shown, that the ductility varies strongly with the shear direction in the sheet plane with respect to the initial rolling direction. The results are discussed in terms of the microstructure evolution during plastic deformation of the alloys.
