Głównym założeniem koncepcji trwałego rozwoju jest szerokie włączenie troski o środowisko, jako podstawy rozwoju społeczno-gospodarczego, we wszystkie realne i regulacyjne działania człowieka. W związku z tym ilość (i zakres) decyzji dotyczących ochrony środowiska jest coraz większa. Niestety, wiele z tych decyzji rodzi społeczny sprzeciw, staje się źródłem konfliktów społecznych. Poprawne uregulowanie tych konfliktów oznacza zbliżanie się do porozumienia umożliwiającego jednoczesne poprawienie stanu środowiska i zaspokojenie potrzeb społecznych.

Incorporation of environmental protection, as the basis of social and economic development, into all real and regulation activities of a man resulted in many decisions on environmental protection. Some of them strongly objected by the society may become the source of social conflicts. Proper regulation of the aforementioned conflicts gets us close to the consensus allowing for the improvement of the state of the environment and satisfaction of social needs i.e. the implementation of the concept of sustainable development. The paper provides a definition of ecological conflicts, presents the specific nature thereof and points to main directions of institutional changes facilitating regulation (avoidance, conciliation, solution) of social conflicts related with environmental protection. Mechanisms which may solve (reduce) conflict situations include: - development of legal guarantees of social consultations and negotiations in the decision making process and access to environmental information - system of compensations for lost benefits; - ecological education; proper preparation of the decision-makers participating in such consultations and negotiations.
