For decades, photogrammetric studies were based on traditional aerial photos. Parallel to this "measurement" course, in the last decades "interpretation" course of photogrammetry developed taking advantage mostly of images of low and medium spatial resolution acquired in optical range viksible and infrared) from the satellite level. Both courses developed quite independent. The situation has rapidly changed in recent years. This is due to appearance of new possibilities of imaging the Earth: aerial digital cameras and satellite system with very high resolution, with a cartographic potential comparable to that of small scale aerial photos. Thus, possibilities of imaging from aerial level and from satellite level became much closer in technical terms. This situation gave rise to vivid discussions in geoinformation community on the future of traditional aerial cameras and prospects of replacing them by digital cameras. With appearance and expected development of satellite imaging with very high resolution, development prospects from aerial level raise doubts. Various opinions on these problems and various scenarios of their development appear. This variety of opinion is characteristic and it is additionally complicated by appearance of new technical sources of imaging: aerial laser scanning, imaging in microwave range, including radar interpherometry (InSAR), and extensive plans of imaging from unmanned air ships operating on high aerial levels. In the paper, an attempt was made to evaluate mutual competitiveness and complanarity of various technical means of Earth surface imaging and to compare their potential with the present and planned need for image data feeding spatial information systems. Current trends and development prospects for these means in the coming years were presented. Perspectives of development of satellite Earth imaging systems and their relations with development of aerial level imaging were more extensively discussed. Finally, the present state of Polands surface imaging and coverage with related products were presented within the context of creating national spatial information infrastructure.
