The study presents an analysis of factors forming the perception of the computer monitor picture. The subject is important from the GIS point of view, especially the internet geographic information services. The inspiration for taking up this subject are the experiences gathered for nearly two years of functioning service: "Bird.s eye view map" being a part of the "Wrota Małopolski" portal. The study describes the crucial factors shaping the Human Visual Perception: colour sensitivity, stimulus sensitivity, threshold contrast, alternating reaction to contrast depending on spatial frequency. Most of the attention has been given to the CSF - Contrast Sensitivity Function of the human eye. Also, the law of logarithmic eye reaction to luminance changes has been mentioned. The said laws have been illustrated graphically and registered as mathematic formulas.A further part of the study characterizes a problem of visualization of the picture in the monitor. Using sample parameters of modern monitors, the rules of calculating maximum projected frequency has been presented. Furthermore, the changes of picture frequencies depending on the observation distancechanges were described.
