Mapping sea ice distribution in the Puck Bay from MODIS satellite data

The aim of the project was to analyze the formation, evolution, and melting of Puck Bay ice cover using MODIS satellite images and to map the number of days per year (during winter 2006) when ice cover was present. Qualitative analysis showed that whenever the average daily air temperature dropped below minus ten degrees centigrade, the ice cover grew rapidly in the open waters of the bay. Strong winds, in contrast, may have decreased ice extent significantly. The Rybitwia Sandbar prevented ice cover from breaking apart and drifting. Satellite images also enabled locating some polynyas along the Hel Peninsula.
