Wczesne dzieje katedry wrocławskiej, tj. do połowy XIII w., od dawna budziły zainteresowanie, lecz długo pozostawały nieznane, wobec braku jakichkolwiek śladów materialnych oraz skąpych i mylących wzmianek źródłowych. Dodatkowo mąciły je hipotezy uczonych niemieckich, oparte na interpretacji tych wzmianek. Dopiero u progu drugiego tysiąclecia, z mroków przeszłości zostały odsłonięte relikty najstarszych budowli Wrocławia, sprzed ponad tysiąca lat - pierwszej i drugiej katedry oraz poprzedzającej je murowanej kaplicy - pierwszej świątyni chrześcijańskiej w tym mieście, świadectwa jego naj-wcześniejszych związków z kulturą Europy. Najszybciej niepamięć ogarnęła pierwszą katedrę, wzniesioną najprawdopodobniej przez Bolesława Chrobrego dla ówczesnego biskupa Jana, wzmiankowanego przez współczesnego mu kronikarza niemieckiego Thietmara z Marseburga w 1000 r. Ludwig Burgemeister i Giinther Grundmann przypuszczali, że romańskie budowle katedry były usytuowane w pobliżu zamku, sądząc, że dawny zamek znajdował się przy ujściu Oławy, na lewym brzegu Odry.
The main objective of the present study was to investigate the architecture of the oldest structures of the cathedral and conservation of excavated relicts. It is also aimed at arranging an exhibition and opening it to the public. Apart from searching beneath the choir, an examination was made of the bishop's crypt below the south aisle at a depth of 3.30-4.70 m below the floor level, succeeded in exposure of the other four structures made of stone, following the early-medieval, prc-Romancsquc and Romanesque styles. The earliest construction dated from the last quarter of the 10th century. A stratigraphic layout of the foundations of all the structures clearly indicated the sequence in which these had been completed: 10th, 11th and 12th centuries. A reconstructed plan of the earliest cathedral showed a basilica of outer dimensions as follows: ca. 30.0 m in length and 18.5 m in width, which was about three quarters of the cathedral in Poznań. It was also smaller in dimensions compared to the first cathedral in Cracow, it represented a type of cathedral similar to the Carolignian one, with two towers to the cast and western edifice with a gallery. Relics of the former structures have not been buried again after examination; these arc carefully exposed in the cathedral, being appropriately designated.
