Development trends for sparkignition engines meet future european emissions regulations

Changes in the new European emissions standards called Euro in and Euro IV and analysis of their influence on emission control technologies for spark ignition engines are presented in the paper. The paper shows the emissions achieved during tests performed according to present and new European procedures (with deletion of the 40-s idle phase) using the bag analysis method and measuring level of CO, HC, NOx in individual phases of these tests. The objective of the research was to determine the increase in emissions of CO, HC and NOx in exhaust gases in the initial phases of engine operation. Methods of reduction this harmful emissions and development trends for new technologies reducing emissions of CO and HC during cold start were also discussed. This projects was carried out within a research program investigating the effect of engines cold start and warm-up at normal and Iow ambient temperatures upon emissions at the BOSMAL Automotive Research and Development Centre in Bielsko-Biała, Poland.
