The paper reviews the theories of the mechanism of coking pressure phenomenon. Special attention is paid to the theories, according to which the origin of coking pressure is connected with the plastic zone of carbonized coal charge. The main elements of these theories are described, i.e. the role of the layers adjacent to the plastic zone, the volume increase of plasticized coal grains and the plastic zone expansion. The recapitulation section analyses the results of research and industrial experience in order to link the mechanism of coking pressure phenomenon with processes taking place inside plasticized coal grains as well as with processes occurring within the plastic zone.
