Inicjatywa Europejskiej wspólnoty Badawczej wysunięta przez Komisję Europejską w 2000r. stwarza nowe możliwości rozwoju lotnictwa, które zostało wybrane jako pokazowa dziedzina przemysłu do realizacji tej inicjatywy. W pracy przedstawiono stan obecny i tendencje rozwojowe europejskiego przemysłu lotniczego. Szczególnie zwrócono uwagę na prace badawczo-rozwojowe, których duży udział w całkowitych obrotach jest charakterystyczny dla przemysłu lotniczego. Omówiono preferencje i kryteria dla projektów badawczych związanych z technologią lotniczą, które obowiązywały w V ramowym programie badawczym. W oparciu o dokumenty opracowane przez Stowarzyszenie Europejskiego Przemysłu Lotniczego AECMA i inne organizacje poza rządowe przedstawiono wizję europejskiego przemysłu lotniczego do roku 2020 oraz rozwój badań i technologii lotniczych niezbędny do spełniania wyzwań stawianych przed tym przemysłem. Dokumenty te sa szczególnie ważne, gdyż zawarte w nich propozycje będą stanowić podstawę dla preferowanej temetyki lotniczych prac badawczo-rozwojowych w następnym VI Ramowym Programie Badawczym na lata 2002-2006. Wskazano także najważniejsze dotychczasowe ustalenia dotyczące VI Programu Ramowego, podkreślając że lotnictwo jest jedną z preferowanych dziedzin.

The initiative for a European Research Area, launched in the year 2000 by the European Commission affords new prospects of the aeronautics development. The aeronautics has been selected as showcase for the implementation of this initiative. The present state and trend of European aeronautics industry development are presented. A particular attention is paid to the Research and Development (R&D) activities. High level of the R&D expenditure of the turnover is distinctive for the European aerospace industry. Priorities and criteria for the aeronautical research and development projects in 5th Framework Programme for Research have been discussed. Based on the documents worked out by AECMA a vision for European aeronautics in the year 2020 and the aeronautical research and technology development sfforts necessary to comply with a number of indicated challenges are presented.The above documents are very important because of presented suggestions, which would be probably a base for priority thematic areas of aeronautical research and technological development projects in the followinng 6thFramework programme for Research. The most important proposiyions and definitions confirmed till now are presented.
