In order to provide for fair world-wide competition of nations and firms it is inter alia necessary to harmonize those normative standards which are expected to govern the world-wide economic activities. Such standards relate e.g. to human rights, labour standards, child labour, customer protection or corruption. The ongoing globalization of the national economies makes this task even more pressing. Nevertheless, thus far international organizations (GATT, WTO, ILO) have not succeded in solving the harmonization problem. We can fairly expect that all countries face a long transition period a period, without harmonized standards and at the same time a period, where the economic activities more and more transcend the borders of nation states and the national law. It is in this unclear situation that we think that corporate ethics will become increasingly important. It is the main function of corporate ethics to support the law in its central task to assure a peaceful solution of all those conflicts caused by corporate strategies. We pretend that corporate ethics in this sense will become (still) more important in the transition period by playing a double role: it may help national economies to better face world-wide competition: in other words, in the transition period corporate ethics may become a competitive strategic advantage of nations. Secondly, it should become more and more part of the responsibility of the multinational corporations and its management to help keeping up peace in and between nations by (1) directly applying adequate normative standards in all strategic activities (self-commitment) and (2) by supporting supra-national organizations to harmonize the normative standards on a world-wide scale. In our argumentation we refer, where possible, to relevant actual events in Germany and U.S.
