Kompleksowe zarządzanie infrastrukturą, w tym infrastrukturą drogową (road asset management), wspierane nowoczesnymi technikami menadżerskimi, takimi jak zarządzanie ryzykiem oraz uwzględniające rachunek kosztów i korzyści w całym cyklu „życia” danego typu infrastruktury są bezwzględnie konieczne, aby sprostać współczesnym wyzwaniom. W ostatnich latach odnotowano bardzo dynamiczny rozwój tej stosunkowo nowej dyscypliny wiedzy. Coraz więcej administracji drogowych na świecie sięga po instrumentarium, jakie omawiana dyscyplina dostarcza i wykorzystuje w codziennej praktyce zarządzania infrastrukturą drogową. Propagowana jest także przez Światowe Stowarzyszenie Drogownictwa PIARC.

Asset management, especially in road engineering, supported by new managerial techniques, such as risk management and cost/benefit analysis in the whole life cycle, is absolutely necessary in order to fulfill present challenges. During recent years, very dynamic development in this field of knowledge have been observed. More and more road administrations in the world reach for instruments offered by such knowledge and they use them in every day practice of road asset management. These are also propagated by World Road Association PIARC.
