W artykule przedstawiono rolę, jaką w wiedzy o mokradłach odgrywa nauka określana jako geomorfologia, której przedmiotem jest rzeźba powierzchni Ziemi. Rzeźba jest tym elementem środowiska przyrodniczego, który decyduje o umiejscowieniu mokradeł, sposobie ich zasilania i warunkach odpływu wody, stanowiąc podstawę zróżnicowania klasyfikacji mokradeł. W pracy podkreślono znaczenie wymiany informacji między przedstawicielami obu dziedzin, posiadających dorobek o znaczeniu międzynarodowym.

In the paper it was shown what role geomorphology, whose scientific subject is the sculpture of the Earth’s surface, plays in the wetland sciences. Relief is the environmental component which conditions the wetlands habitat and together with geological structure determines what type of alimentation dominates (precipitation, surface or ground water). This dependence is well illustrated in a wetlands classification work at IMUZ by OKRUSZKO [1992], in which wetlands are classified according to their type of hydrological supply (THZ). Wetlands belonging to a specified type of hydrological supply does not decide about it specifically. The relief condition is not the only kind of alimentation, but also impacts the condition of runoff. If we notice that the functioning of wetlands depends mainly on the hydrological conditions and these are connected with the relief, then we can come to the conclusion that the strategy of protecting wetlands’ natural values should not be separate from geomorphology because it can mean losing perspective of the simple cause – effect dependence which controls the natural environment. In this paper the importance of communication between representatives of both these scientific fields was also presented.
