W pracy przedstawiono oraz scharakteryzowano metody detekcji powszechnie wykorzystywane w chromatografii wykluczania (ang. Size Exclusion Chromatography, SEC), dawniej określanej terminem chromatografia żelowa (ang. Gel Permeation Chromatography, GPC).

The aim of this paper is to present and characterize the detection methods commonly used in size exclusion chromatography (SEC), in older literature called gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Size exclusion chromatography allows the determination of molecular weight of compounds, as well as determination of the molecular mass distribution of mixtures of compounds mainly polymers. In this technique, the compounds are separated on a porous stationary phase based on the difference in size (particularly in their hydrodynamic radius) of individual analytes which can be correlated with their molecular mass. A characteristic feature of this technique is that the complete separation occurs before the dead volume of the column (retention time of unretained compound). During the ideal SEC conditions the stationary phase does not interact with the components of the sample. The detectors used in SEC should have an universal and constant response factor regarding to all components of separated mixture, if a molecular mass distribution is the purpose of analysis. In special applications the detection system can be expended using additional selective detectors, allowing to obtain wider range of data from one chromatogram.
