The paper describes the chain of events that had led to the creation ofthe relativity theories, first the special, then the general one. It is emphasized that Einstein did not overturn the older physics but built a new structure upon it, which includes Newton's mechanics as a limit and contains Maxwell's theory of electromagnetism verbatim. A few popular misconceptions about relativity vs. Newtonian mechanics are corrected.
