Forensic accounting : fraud detection skills for external auditors

The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of forensic accounting skills, consisting of the auditing skills; investigative knowledge and skills; legal knowledge; communication skills; psychological, criminological and victimological skills; accounting skills; and ICT-related skills of external auditors, on their ability to detect fraud. A survey was administered with a quantitative approach, with a population comprising accountants working in public accounting offices classified as Big Four firms. 370 external auditors were selected as samples for the study. To collect the data needed, questionnaires, in-depth interviews and documents from the accounting offices were employed. In addition, to analyze the data, multiple regression analysis was implemented. The results show that some forensic accounting skills, namely auditing skills; communication skills; psychological, criminological and victimological skills; and ICT-related skills are influential in fraud detection, while other skills, that is investigative skills, legal skills, and accounting skills do not have an influence. It is proven that some of the skills provide more benefit after the fraud has been detected.

Celem tego badania jest identyfikacja wpływu umiejętności rachunkowych w zakresie medycyny sądowej, na które składają się umiejętności kontrolne; wiedza i umiejętności śledcze; wiedza prawnicza; zdolności do porozumiewania się, psychologiczne, umiejętności kryminologiczne i wiktymologiczne; umiejętności rachunkowe; oraz związane z ICT oraz umiejętności zewnętrznych audytorów, w zakresie ich zdolności do wykrywania oszustw. Ankieta została przeprowadzona metodą ilościową, z populacją obejmującą księgowych pracujących w publicznych biurach rachunkowych, które są sklasyfikowane, jako firmy z Wielkiej Czwórki. Trzystu siedemdziesięciu zewnętrznych audytorów zostało wybranych do próby badawczej. Aby zebrać potrzebne dane, zastosowano wywiady i dokumenty z biur rachunkowych. Ponadto w celu analizy danych przeprowadzono analizę regresji wielokrotnej. Wyniki pokazują, że niektóre umiejętności rachunkowości sądowej, a mianowicie umiejętności kontrolne; zdolności do porozumiewania się; umiejętności psychologiczne, kryminologiczne oraz wiktymologiczne; a także z zakresu ICT mają wpływ na wykrywanie oszustw, podczas gdy inne umiejętności, tj. umiejętności dochodzeniowe, umiejętności prawne i umiejętności księgowe nie mają wpływu. Udowodniono, że niektóre umiejętności zapewniają więcej korzyści po wykryciu oszustwa.

Przed laboratoriami kryminalistycznymi stoi niezwykle ważne zadanie jednoznacznej identyfikacji produktów konopi, a co się z tym wiąże, dobór odpowiednich technik analitycznych, które pozwolą na zminimalizowanie możliwości popełnienia błędu. W końcu opinie ekspertów są podstawą wydawanych wyroków.

Cyber attacks against cloud computing discourage users to migrate to cloud computing. Cloud computing currently has weaknesses in terms of securing data. Unprotected data and weak storage security are potential threats to cloud computing. There are security risks and they should be considered carefully before enterprises migrate to cloud computing. Specifying cloud computing vulnerabilities and defining cyber attacks against infrastructure of the Cloud are the targets of this research. Mitigation of the non-technical problems may decrease the security problems. However, cryptographies, distributed denial of service and flooding attacks damage the servers and services. In this research, my aim is to demonstrate cloud computing vulnerability and the threats against data and storage. Once the cloud security problems are defined, the next step is to look for a solution. Using forensic methods to inspect intrusion attempts, implementing an online forensic workstation monitoring the login details of cloud authentication server, providing evidence of cyber crime are recommended.

Rapid profiling of crude scorpion venom using liquid chromatography and its relevance to species identification

We present the comprehensive chromatographic profiles of three scorpion species, Androctonus crassicauda, Androctonus bicolor, and Leiurus quinquestriatus, commonly inhabited to Middle East regions. Their venoms were milked by electrical stimulation, diluted with distilled water, properly mixed and centrifuged to separate the mucus from venom. The clear supernatant was filtered and the protein concentration was determined. Pre-diluted venoms were chromatographed on FPLC (fast protein liquid chromatography) and RP-HPLC (reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography) and the fractions were collected for molecular weight determination. Both techniques have resulted clearly distinguishable chromatographic patterns that can be used for identification of scorpion species and having a quick indication of venom toxicity.

Forensic investigators spend much of their time comparing toolmarks. Their work can benefit significantly from computer systems which will screen large numbers of toolmarks and identify potential matches for final confirmation by the human expert. This paper presents the data reduction and comparison techniques needed to represent and match striated toolmarks, which are an important class of forensic evidence.

Eksperci kryminalistyki poświęcają wiele czasu na porównywanie śladów narzędzi. Znaczną pomocą w ich pracy mogą być systemy komputerowe, przeglądające duże zbiory śladów i wyszukujące potencjalne podobieństwa. Ostateczne potwierdzenie zgodności dwóch śladów pozostanie przy tym w gestii eksperta -- człowieka. Ważną klasę śladów narzędzi stanowią ślady prążkowe. Artykuł opisuje techniki redukcji i porównywania danych niezbędnych do reprezentacji i pasowania takich śladów.
