Winter in Poland lasts 60 - 70 days on Silesian Plain, and 110 - 120 days in Suwalskie Lake District. Winter’s basic destructive factor is low temperatures, temperatures below 0°C, appearing from December to March. All the factors, characteristic for winter, exert a significant influence on the possibilities to carry out combat operations. The troops must always take into consideration various winter surprises and whims - from very low temperatures and big snowfall to cloudiness and thaws. Frost, snow and low temperature influence the organisation and course of actions, however, they do not decide on the combat results. Noticing and taking into account the specific character of actions in definite conditions must be the commander’s and staff officer’s skill, the ability to evaluate the terrain and weather conditions in a correct way and also their influence on the possibility to accomplish a task. The article presents basic conditions of carrying out combat actions in these conditions and principles to conduct offensive and defence operations. The allies’ viewpoints have been taken into account in these considerations, when combat in these conditions is described.
