The purpose of this article is to define the role of environmental management in building relationships with suppliers. Emerging trends related to the implementation of the concept of Sustainable Supply Chain cause that participants of the supply chains are interested in implementing an environmental management system based on the requirements of the ISO series 14000. These standards emphasize the definition of objectives (based on the environmental aspects), programs to improve impact on the environment, as well as compliance with legal requirements.. The implementation of this system is also due to expectations of institutional clients who also treat environmental management as a criterion for the initial assessment and periodic assessment of suppliers
