Power industry is a main factor affecting the environment, and in particular the atmosphere. One of the alternatives of traditional power industry (basing on the conventional fuel) is unconventional power industry basing on renewable energy sources. In Poland the latter constitutes barely 1.5% of energy balance. As confirmed by the hitherto studies one of the places predestined to avail itself of the renewable energy sources is the area of the Green Lungs of Poland. The success of implementation of the programmes of utilisation of renewable energy sources is closely related to the way in which it is being perceived by the inhabitants of the area and to economic situation. To obtain information on those issues it was necessary to carry on sociological studies of the ecological awareness of the inhabitants of the north-eastern part of Poland. The author presents the results of the studies carried out in the first half of 1999 on a representative sample of 518 inhabitants of the north-eastern part of Poland.
