Zasady ekologii odniesione do budynków nakazują uwzględniać ich cykl życiowy, użyteczność i różnorakie przystosowanie do potrzeb życia codziennego. Chociaż postulat użyteczności budowli znany jest od traktatu Witruwiusza, to współczesna architektura aspirująca do miana ekologicznej zdaje się gubić element ponadczasowości - atrybut dzieła architektonicznego. Rozważania na temat przemijania i użyteczności prowadzą do pytań o "nową" (?) jakość estetyczną proponowanych dziś rozwiązań.

Ecology used in reference to buildings dictate the necessity to consider their life cycle, usefulness and varied accommodation to everyday needs. The requirement of usefulness is already known from the Vitruvius' treatise but the contemporary architecture aspiring to be called ecological, seems to lose the element of timelessness - the necessary attribute of the work of architecture. The consideration of the decline and usefulness leads to questions about the "new" (?) aesthetic quality of the nowadays proposed solutions.
