Abstrakty
The paper is an attempt to collect and systemize the problems that diagnostic technicians encounter when they try to scan and interpret the OBD data with generic scanning devices. The origins of OBD have been depicted in brief along with the objectives that the designers wished to attain. The transmission protocols have been characterized and compared in order to help the readers understand the difficulties which the manufacturers of both, software and ECU controllers, had to overcome. Further section of the paper discusses the procedures applied by the institutions responsible for type approvals of the scanning devices and vehicles for their compatibility with the OBD standards. The same section also discusses the errors occurring during the type approval tests. The final part is a representation of problems related to the OBD scanning and interpretation processes known to the authors. The final part also includes a troubleshooting guide.
