W artykule przedstawiono powstanie i upadek legendy o rzekomym niemieckim wynalazcy żarówki Heinrichu Goebelu. Informacje, że to właśnie Amerykanin niemieckiego pochodzenia jest prawdziwym wynalazcą żarówki, rozpowszechniane były przez ponad osiemdziesiąt lat na obszarach niemieckojęzycznych. Kres lansowaniu tej tezy położyła rozprawa doktorska Hansa Christiana Rohde - nauczyciela gimnazjum w rodzinnej miejscowości Heinricha Goebela. Rohde - absolwent germanistyki, historii i nauk politycznych a jednocześnie pasjonat lokalnej historii, miał dostęp do wszystkich materiałów archiwalnych z procesów sądowych w Stanach Zjednoczonych dotyczących praw patentowych do żarówki. Wynikało z nich jednoznacznie, że niemiecki wynalazca żarówki to tylko legenda.

The article shows the creation and fall of the legend about Heinrich Goebel, an alleged German inventor of a light bulb. The information that it was an American of German origin who had really invented a light bulb, had been spread for over eighty years in the German - speaking countries. The doctoral thesis of Hans Christian Rohde, a middle - school teacher in the home town of Heinrich Goebel, put an end to the legend. Rohde, a graduate in German studies, history and political science and at the same time, a local history enthusiast, had access to all archive material from the Lawsuits in the United States of America concerning the patent law on a light bulb. It resulted from the material that in fact it was only a legend that the German invented a light bulb.
