Komary i meszki kojarzą nam się głównie z wyjazdami nad wodę. Błędem jednak byłoby stwierdzenie, że ich obecność nie dokucza nam też w miastach, zwłaszcza że większość z nich posiada na swoim terenie lub okolicy różnego rodzaju zbiorniki wodne. Duże zagęszczenie ssaków oznacza dla tych kąsających owadów bogate źródło pokarmu.

Mosquitos and black flies are among the least favourite species of the world - they bite, their buzz makes us and animals restless and on top of that they are a vector for many pathogens, such as Plasmodium and West Nile Virus. There are a few methods of reducing their population, what is gradually becoming a very important issue, especially on urbanised areas, where they have easily adapted to the prevailing conditions. One of the solutions to this problem is active protection of urban populations of birds (mainly swifts and swallows), as well as bats.
