EN

The Arctowski lake is situated on the King George Island (Antarctica). It has arisen behind storm ridges in a depression where water from melting snow and atmospheric precipitation is collected. Its surface is changing from about 8000 m2 by low water level to over 80000 m2 during the spring thaw. The maximal depth of the lake reaches about 170 cm in spring. The highest water levels occur during the spring thaw, low levels are observed at the end of summer after melting the snow cover in the catchment area. The Arctowski Lake is situated immediately by the sea in the range of its tides, therefore its water is salty. The water temperature in the lake depends on the atmospheric conditions. In sunny days the water gets worm strongly (over 15°C by the shore). Vertically the water temperature is even as a result of the mixing of water by the wind. The Arctowski Lake freezes very quickly to the bottom and the ice cover stays from March till November.
