Autorzy przedstawili politykę ekologiczną i stan formalnoprawny Unii Europejskiej w zakresie wykorzystania biopaliw w pojazdach mechanicznych. Na podstawie zaleceń Protokółu z Kyoto, związanych z ograniczeniem emisji gazów cieplarnianych, głównie ditlenku węgla, w Unii Europejskiej zwrócono uwagę na alternatywne źródła energii dla pojazdów mechanicznych - biopaliwa. Odpowiednie dyrektywy w tej sprawie przewidują stopniowy wzrost podaży na rynku biopaliw oraz ich zawartości w tradycyjnym paliwie węglowodorowym.

The currently available information on the European ecological policy and the legislation on biofuels are briefly reviewed. On the base of the Kyoto protocol, concentrated on the reduction of the gas emission, especially carbon dioxide, the European Commission promotes the use of renewable fuels in transportation. The enacted directives promote the use of biofuels by Members States. It obligates Members States to ensure fiat biofuels provide a certain percentage of transport fuels sold on their territory.
