Thermography is widely used in veterinary medicine and equine physiotherapy, as a complementary diagnostic tool for diseases of the musculoskeletal system and monitoring of the tissue regeneration process. It is particularly useful in diagnosing inflammation in the distal parts of the limbs, such as arthritis and tendonitis, periosteitis and purulent hoof inflammation. In the case of the back, this method works well in diagnosing tension of the sacro-lumbar muscles, spinous processes of the thoracic spine and inflammation of the paraspinal muscles. Thermography is also effective in diagnosing subclinical inflammation up to two weeks before clinical symptoms appear. Thermography is used to assess and monitor the effectiveness of physical treatments such as magnetotherapy, laser therapy, shock wave or cryotherapy, and kinesitherapy. The definition of unambiguous procedures for thermographic examinations and the method of early diagnosis of problems with the equine musculoskeletal system may contribute to the dissemination of this effective diagnostic method in equestrian centres.
