Deciphering historical documents, faded throughout the centuries, has been one of the problems in conservation, which still remains unsolved. It refers especially to documents written by means of ferric-gallic acid ink which was used in the past as a writing material. Its permanence decreases in the course of time and we deal with the phenomenon of text disappearance and paper damage in the parts where it was used. Using precious diary of Leonard Niedźwiedzki as an example, scientific work on the possibility of deciphering illegible fragments by means of electromagnetic radiation in various ranges has been undertaken. The latest techniques provided by Swiss equipment DOCUCENTER 3000, made by PROJECTINA, have been applied. The disappearing text was analyzed against different levels of luminescence. Due to the application of proper filters the intensity of luminescence was automatically registered. Computer processing of the registered picture allowed for the enforcement of the parts of the text illegible or hardly noticeable in the daylight. The above method makes it possible to reconstruct a historical text without the application of chemical reagents and consequently without damaging its structure. The method can be used with historical documents in ferric-gallic ink.
