W artykule podjęto próbę analizy zakresu dotychczas realizowanych badań naukowych w obszarze dotyczącym zarządzania środowiskowego na poziomie organizacji, co pozwoliło na określenie luk i zaproponowanie dalszych kierunków prac badawczych. Zdefiniowano zakres dotychczas realizowanych badań naukowych dotyczących problematyki systemów zarządzania środowiskowego na świecie. Stwierdzono, że system zarządzania wiedzą o aspektach środowiskowych działalności organizacji powinien być budowany równocześnie z systemem zarządzania środowiskowego.

Practical adaptation of the Environmental Management Systems (EMS) increases interest of scientists, especially in the field of: existing problems and ways of resolving them; use of good management practices; costs and benefits gained from EMS; tools of continual improvement of the EMS. In the paper, the Author carries out an analysis of the currently conducted scientific research in the field of environmental management systems and classifies them. This allows to identify the existing gaps and propose future research trends.
