Proces rodzenia się i dojrzewania nowoczesnego modelu planowania miast osiągnął szczególną intensywność i wyrazistość zjawisk w miastach amerykańskich. Miastem, gdzie proces ten jest szczególnie wyraźny, jest Filadelfia. Artykuł przybliża i analizuje poszczególne etapy planowania krajobrazu Filadelfii, od momentu jej założenia do czasów współczesnych. Na przestrzeni 330 lat obserwujemy zmienne koleje losów struktury przestrzennej miasta. Jednak przez cały ten okres przebijają się idee i próby odwrócenia chaotycznych i niekorzystnych sił wzrostu i ukierunkowania ich na działania systemowe, oparte na równoważeniu czynników rozwoju. Realizacja tej koncepcji rozwoju wprowadza Filadelfię na drogę procesów sterowalnych. Artykuł wskazuje, że zmiana taka możliwa była dzięki jednoczesnemu spełnieniu wielu warunków. Spośród nich najważniejsze to: zachowanie ciągłości procesu planistycznego, śmiała wizja kierunku przekształceń i konsekwencja w jej realizowaniu oraz uspołecznienie całego procesu. Dziś proces planowania krajobrazu Filadelfii jest zjawiskiem dojrzałym na tyle, by móc przeciwstawiać się współczesnym, niekorzystnym dla rozwoju miasta zjawiskom i przynosić realne korzyści jej mieszkańcom.

The process of birth and maturation of modern urban planning reached its special intensity and clarity of phenomena in American cities. The city where this process is particularly noticeable is Philadelphia. The article introduces and analyzes the various stages of planning the landscape of Philadelphia, from its foundation to the present day. Within the space of 330 years the vicissitudes of fate of the spatial structure of the city have been observed. However, throughout the whole period break through ideas and attempts to reverse the chaotic and negative forces of growth and to direct them at system operations, based on balancing of the factors of development. The realization of this concept implements the development of Philadelphia onto the route of manageable processes. The article suggests that such a change was possible thanks to the simulta-neous fulfillment of many conditions. The most important of them are: the continuity of the planning process, daring vision of the direction of transformation and consistency in its implementation and socialization of the entire process. Today, the landscape planning process of Philadelphia is an enough mature phenomenon to be able to stand up to today's phenomena, disadvantageous to the development of the city and bring real benefits to its residents.
