Zmysły odgrywają bardzo ważną rolę w percepcji przestrzeni. Architektura była i jest traktowana przede wszystkim jako sztuka dla oka, kładąc nacisk na kompozycję wizualną, harmonię, proporcje. Dominacja wzroku nigdy nie była tak silna jak w dzisiejszej erze obrazów wizualnych i przemysłowej masowej produkcji". Szybko rozwijające się technologie są jednak także coraz częściej wykorzystywane do tworzenia instalacji, które oddziałują na użytkownika bodźcami sensorycznymi lub wchodzą z nim w interakcję. Architektura i przestrzenie publiczne projektowane z myślą o wrażeniach wielozmysłowych, zarówno w przypadku interwencji tymczasowych, jak i trwałych, cieszą się dużą popularnością i często dostarczają niezapomnianych przeżyć. Rozwój technologiczny przyniósł ze sobą wiele zmian do warunków panujących w mieście, do jego funkcjonowania i ogólnej atmosfery. Nie zawsze są to zmiany korzystne, szczególnie pod względem multisensorycznej percepcji przestrzeni. Jednak nowe technologie, wykorzystane do budowania nowych wielozmysłowych doświadczeń miejskich, wykazują potencjał do poszerzania zakresów pozawzrokowego odbioru przestrzeni współczesnego miasta.

Senses play an extremely important role in spatial experiences. Architecture has always been regarded as an visual art. with special focus on composition, proportions and harmony. Domination of the sight has never been that strong, as „in our current era of the visual image and its industrial mass production”. The fast developing new technologies are very often integrated into artistic installations, which have a sensorial impact on people and invite them to interact. Architecture and spaces designed with special multisensorial approach, both temporary and permanent, tend to be very popular and create unforgettable experiences The technological development brought many changes to the city's conditions, its performance and general atmosphere. These changes are not always positive, especially in the “sensing the city" context. Nevertheless, new technologies involved in creating new sensorial urban experiences, seem to have a great potential in increasing the non-visual perception of the contemporary city.
