Humic substances (HS) are the most widespread group of organic compounds in nature. They are commonly found in water, groundwater, soils, peat bogs, swamps, wastewater and sewage sludge. HS are used in agricultural, industry, veterinary, construction, ecological economy and in removing soil pollution. HS play a very important role in the whole ecosystem, they regulate global cycles of carbon and nitrogen. HS directly participate in the release of nutrients, pH buffering capacity and cation exchange as well as heavy metal retention. Sewage sludge are potential source of humic fertilizers for soil improvement. However it should be remembered that they may contain pathogenic microorganisms, heavy metals, phytotoxic organic compounds and have an intense smell, so they must be properly neutralized before using them as fertilizer i.e. in the composting process. Therefore, the process of humification during wastewater treatment is a very important and interesting issue, knowledge about it can help determine the suitability of sludge for agricultural purposes and indicate the changes that are needed to achieve this. This is a very important aspect to use treated wastewater as much as possible, for example for irrigation or in modern technologies converting wastewater into drinking water. According to many scientists HS-based products are the future direction of economic and ecological solutions for the economy and their importance and environmental impact will increase. Therefore, the purpose of the work is to present the characteristics of HS in the wastewater and sewage sludge and the possibility of their use.
