The significant problem in the revitalization of degraded brownfields is to assure the sustainability of the regeneration process during specific stages of the project's life span. In the framework of the international project called RESCUE - "Regeneration of European Sites in Cities and Urban Environment" a set of sustainability objectives was defined and the Sustainability Assessment Tool (SAT) proposed. In parallel, the so-called Best Practices Methodology (BPM) for an assessment of the sustainability of revitalization projects has been developed by the author at the Central Mining Institute (GIG) in Katowice, Poland. Verification of this tool as applied to the evaluation of revitalization projects in two Polish cities, Sosnowiec and Bytom, was done by a team of researchers from the Central Mining Institute. This article presents the BPM methodology and the example of its use in the revitalization of a former coalmine in Sosnowiec. The process of sustainable revitalization of this brownfield has been studied taking into consideration five aspects: A1 - Management of contamination and reuse of soil and rubble; A2 - Land use and urban planning on the brownfield; A3 - Management of the existing buildings and infrastructure; A4 - Planning process and methods for the citizen participation, A5 - Management of the brownfield revitalization projects.

Istotnym problemem związanym z rewitalizacją zdegradowanych terenów poprzemysłowych jest zapewnienie przebiegu tego procesu zgodnie z zasadami zrównoważonego rozwoju podczas wszystkich etapów tycia projektu. W ramach projektu RESCUE - „Regeneracja terenów w miastach europejskich i ich otoczeniu" (Regeneration of European Sites in Cities and Urban Environment) zdefiniowano katalog zrównoważonych celów rewitalizacji oraz metodą oceny RESCUE-SAT. Równolegle, w Głównym Instytucie Górnictwa opracowana została przez autora Metodyka Najlepszych Praktyk BPM (Best Practice Methodology) do oceny projektów rewitalizacji. Zespól Głównego Instytutu Górnictwa pod kierunkiem autora dokonał praktycznej weryfikacji metodyki BPM na przykładzie oceny projektów rewitalizacji terenów poprzemysłowych zlokalizowanych w Bytomiu i Sosnowcu. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono metodyką BPM oraz przykład jej zastosowania dla terenu po byłej kopalni węgla kamiennego w Sosnowcu. Proces zrównoważonej rewitalizacji terenów rozpatrzono, uwzględniając pięć aspektów: A1- zarządzanie zanieczyszczeniami i ponownym użyciem gleby i gruzu, A2 - wykorzystanie terenu i projektowanie rozwoju miasta na terenach poprzemysłowych, A3 - zarządzanie istniejącymi budynkami i infrastrukturą o walorach historycznych i kulturowych (dziedzictwo), A4 - proces planowania i partycypacja społeczna, A5 - zarządzanie projektami rewitalizacji.
