The article presents an assessment of the safety of maritime transport on the basis of statistical analysis of types and causes of accidents at sea, in which ships of Polish nationality participated. Following issues have been discussed: their number and structure by type and trend of their change in the linear form. The essential factors that affect the improvement of security in maritime transport were also characterized.
