Identification of short-circuits in a power line and estimation of its parameters

Abstrakty
The development of GPS-synchronized distributed measurement systems caused a significant progress in the identification of short circuits in overhead power lines for the purposes of inspection and repair. The usage of voltages and currents measured on both ends of a line as inputs for a localizer enhanced the identification of short circuits as opposed to the local measurements. The innovative measurement methods allow for the identification of short-circuits without knowing line parameters and the calculated parameters can be applied, for instance, for protection relay settings management. The deployment of efficient methods of measurement signal transmission over large distances and GPS-based synchronization resulted in the implementation of wide area measurement systems (WAMS) in the power systems, with PMU (Phasor Measurement Unit) being the basic element of such measurement systems.
